Ron Farr


Ron has 50 years with the fire service, serving 3 years as the State Fire Marshal for Michigan and prior to that Ron served with the Charter Township of Kalamazoo (Michigan) Fire Department for 37 years … the last 6 years as their Fire Chief.  Most recently Ron was employed with UL – LLC in their Codes and Advisory Services Division.  He continues to be involved with the Plainwell Department of Public Safety.

Ron is a member of numerous state and national fire service organizations to include the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, Michigan Fire Inspectors, International Fire Marshals Association, and is a Life Member of the NFPA. 

He is a member of several NFPA Technical Committees, to include NFPA 1730, Standard on Organization and Deployment of Code Enforcement, Plan Review, Fire Investigation, and Public Education Operations to the Public, and NFPA 1300, Standard on Community Risk Assessment and Community Risk Reduction Plan Development, both of which he currently chairs. He is also a former member of the NFPA Standards Council.

Ron is a Certified Fire Inspector, and a long time Fire Service Instructor.   He has lectured at numerous state and national conferences and training programs.

Ron is a Past President of the International Fire Marshals Association, Michigan Fire Inspectors Society and the Michigan Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

He is the recipient of several awards to include the International Fire Marshals Association’s Percey Bugbee Award for Notable, Significant and Enduring Contributions to Fire Safety, the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society Fire Inspector of the Year Award and the President’s Award for Excellence in Fire Safety Education, the R. Wayne Powell Excellence in Fire Prevention Award from PARADE a part of the U.S. Fire Administration, and the Michigan Association of Fire Chief’s Fire Chief of the Year.
