EDP Encounters: De-escalation Techniques for Communications Staff

This course will be seminar-based and take place in the classroom. It is for all law enforcement communication personnel. It will focus on developing an understanding of mental disorders and substance abuse. Topics will include active listening skills, crisis assessment skills, and de-escalation techniques for various crisis/suicide situations. In addition, we will review mental health and wellness programs evidenced to improve overall wellness in emergency dispatchers/911 operators. This course will also provide insight into the process of mental hygiene petitions/involuntary commitments and community resources.
