This course will provide training to public safety personnel on what to do before, during, and after an active shooting incident. The objective is to train participants on how to pre-plan for an integrated community response to an active shooting incident, and how to respond to such an incident to best protect lives of the responders and potential victims


Students who complete Active Shooting Response successfully will be able to:

  • Identify the need for pre-planning for active shooting incidents
  • Identify the mentality, characteristics, and desired mission of the active shooter
  • Discuss the dispatcher’s role in active shooting incidents related to questioning and protecting the caller/witness
  • Discuss the dispatcher’s role in protecting and informing law enforcement officers responding to active shooting incidents
  • Identify specific issues related to violence in educational facilities
  • Identify crisis intervention strategies and other tactics used to communicate with suicidal active shooters and hostage situations
  • Discuss the need for critical incident stress debriefings following active shooting incidents for dispatchers
